This Maple burl was collected in 2025 from a neighbor 2 streets down from my shop. It was taken down due to rotting on the inside, making it a hazard. Products made from this tree are labeled T9.
The arborists were going to use it as wood for their stove, but I asked if I could have it to try and make something. They were doubtful because it had collected dirt on the inside! I sawed it in half, and yes, there was about 3 cups of earth that had been created by leaves and other plant debris falling into the crevice at some point. The tree had grown all the way around the dirt!Â
I was able to make some beautiful pieces from this despite its flaws! So far, I have made two small bowls and a few wine bottle stoppers! I think I will be able to make a couple more items in 2026.
